Tecno’s EllaClaw AI agent wants to clean up your phone and run your errands

Most AI assistants are happy to chat with you, but they rarely roll up their sleeves and get things done. Tecno wants to change that with EllaClaw, its beta-stage mobile AI agent that aims to handle real tasks on your phone instead of just answering questions. The company showed off the next version of EllaClaw, and it now reaches deeper into your device and your favorite apps.

EllaClaw represents a significant shift in how we think about artificial intelligence on mobile devices. Traditional voice assistants like Siri, Google Assistant, and Alexa excel at answering queries, setting reminders, and controlling smart home devices. However, they often stop short of performing complex, multi-step operations within apps or optimizing the device's performance. EllaClaw aims to bridge this gap by acting as a proactive agent that can manipulate the phone's internal state and interact with third-party applications in a visible, human-like manner.

This development comes as smartphone manufacturers seek to differentiate themselves in a saturated market. While hardware improvements have slowed, software intelligence offers a new frontier for innovation. Tecno, known for offering feature-rich devices at competitive prices, is positioning EllaClaw as a value-added service that enhances the user experience without requiring additional hardware upgrades. The agent is currently in closed beta, but its capabilities hint at a future where your phone truly understands and anticipates your needs.

Tired of a slow, hot, battery-drained phone? EllaClaw has the solution.

EllaClaw packs over 40 Smart Skills that let it act like a caretaker for your device. You can ask it to free up RAM and CPU to fix lag, find the apps draining your battery, or cool down your phone when it gets too hot during heavy use. These tasks are typically handled manually by users through settings menus or third-party cleaner apps, but EllaClaw automates them with a simple voice command. For example, if you notice your phone stuttering during a game, you can say, "EllaClaw, free up memory," and it will terminate background processes and clear caches without closing your active application.

There's also a Smart Data Guardian that keeps an eye on your mobile data, which is a thoughtful touch for anyone tired of running out before the month ends. Before it makes any big changes, EllaClaw checks in with you first, so nothing happens behind your back. This transparent approach is crucial for building trust, especially when the agent has access to sensitive system utilities. Users retain full control over which actions are performed, and they can undo changes if needed.

The battery optimization feature is particularly noteworthy. Modern smartphones pack powerful processors and high-refresh-rate displays, but these components consume significant power. EllaClaw can identify apps that are unusually active in the background, restrict their data usage, or put them to sleep when not in use. It can also suggest lowering screen brightness or switching to a lower refresh rate during specific scenarios, such as when you are reading an e-book or listening to music with the screen off.

It can also learn your habits over time and use that information to help with daily routines. You can ask it to give you morning briefings that pull in your calendar, weather, and news, or act as a trip assistant that books rides and sets your departure alarms. The learning capability is powered by on-device machine learning, meaning your data stays private while the agent adapts to your preferences. Over a few weeks of use, EllaClaw might learn that you typically check traffic at 8 AM on weekdays and proactively show you the best route to work without being asked.

What more can it do?

EllaClaw can also work across different apps, including shopping, food delivery, transportation, and smart home services. Instead of working like a mysterious black box, it navigates your apps in a visible, human-like way, so you can watch each step. This visibility is a key differentiator from other AI agents that operate invisibly in the background. When you ask EllaClaw to order a pizza, for example, it will open the food delivery app, search for nearby pizzerias, add items to the cart, and pause at the checkout screen for your confirmation. You see every tap and swipe, and you can intervene at any point.

This cross-app capability opens up a world of possibilities for automation. Imagine telling EllaClaw, "Plan a date night for Friday." The agent would check your calendar for availability, browse restaurant booking apps for reservations, search movie showtimes, and even order an Uber to the venue. All these steps are executed serially, with the agent asking for your input at key decision points. The result is a seamless experience that saves you from juggling multiple apps.

For now, EllaClaw is still an exploratory concept in closed beta. As Jack Guo, General Manager of Tecno, put it, the goal is to help "simplify everyday tasks, reduce friction and make advanced experiences more accessible, while ensuring transparency and user control remain central." This philosophy aligns with broader industry trends toward on-device AI that respects privacy and offers tangible utility. Unlike cloud-dependent assistants that require constant internet connectivity, EllaClaw's core functions work offline, relying on local processing for speed and security.

The implications of such an agent extend beyond convenience. For elderly or less tech-savvy users, EllaClaw can serve as a digital assistant that simplifies complex operations. For power users, it offers deep control over device performance without needing to root or install third-party tools. And for developers, the platform could eventually open APIs to allow custom skill creation, much like Amazon Alexa's skills but with deeper device integration.

Tecno says more details will come as development moves forward. It's one of the few smartphone AI agents that actually seems to help users instead of aggravating them. I would love to see it come out of beta so I can test its claims and see how it performs in the real world. Early indications suggest that EllaClaw could redefine our relationship with our phones, transforming them from passive tools into active partners that take the initiative to keep our devices running smoothly and our lives organized.

As the mobile industry watches Tecno's experiment, other manufacturers are likely to follow suit. We may soon see similar agents from Samsung, Xiaomi, and even Apple, each with their own take on proactive device management. The era of passive voice assistants may be giving way to a new generation of active AI agents that don't just talk—they act. Tecno's EllaClaw, with its focus on transparency, user control, and tangible results, sets a promising benchmark for what's possible.
