A Brief History of the StanbyMe Line

LG’s StanbyMe concept first appeared in 2022 as a unique portable television that could be moved around the home on a wheeled stand. The original model featured a 27-inch 1080p display, a built-in battery, and a design that allowed it to be used in various orientations. It quickly gained a following among consumers who wanted a TV that wasn’t anchored to a wall or a cabinet. The device was particularly popular for outdoor gatherings, kitchen counter viewing, and even bathroom entertainment, thanks to its IP-rated water resistance.

In July 2025, LG released the StanbyMe 2, which upgraded the display to 27-inch 1440p resolution. This improvement offered sharper images and better detail, making it more suitable for streaming content from services like Netflix, YouTube, and Disney+. The second generation also refined the battery life and added a more robust stand with improved maneuverability. The StanbyMe 2 received positive reviews for its versatility and picture quality, but many users still desired a higher resolution and a larger screen.

What’s New in the 32-Inch 4K Version

Now, less than a year after the StanbyMe 2 launch, LG has introduced a third variant that addresses those demands. The newest model, which is being called the StanbyMe 2 4K or simply the 32-inch StanbyMe 2, features a larger 32-inch display with a native 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution. This is a significant leap from the previous 1440p panel, offering four times the pixel count and a dramatically sharper image. The screen size increase from 27 inches to 32 inches also provides a more immersive viewing experience, whether users are watching movies, playing games, or following recipes in the kitchen.

The 4K upgrade is particularly relevant for content that is already available in ultra-high definition. Streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV+ offer a growing library of 4K HDR content, and the new StanbyMe 2 can display it with fine detail and vibrant colors. While LG has not specified the exact panel technology, it is likely an IPS LCD with LED backlighting, similar to the previous model, but now optimized for higher pixel density. The 32-inch size also makes it more suitable for use as a secondary desktop monitor or for presentations in small meeting rooms.

Portability and Battery Life

One of the key selling points of the StanbyMe line is its portability. The new 32-inch model retains the signature wheeled stand that allows users to roll the TV from room to room or even take it outside on a patio or deck. The stand also enables the screen to be tilted and rotated into portrait mode, which is ideal for vertical content like social media videos or digital signage. LG has improved the battery life slightly: while the previous 27-inch 1440p model offered about 3.5 to 4 hours of use on a full charge, the new 32-inch 4K version extends that to 4.5 hours. This is a welcome improvement, especially considering the higher power consumption of the larger, higher-resolution panel.

The battery is built into the base of the stand, keeping the center of gravity low and ensuring stability. When not in use, the TV can be plugged into an AC outlet to recharge the battery, and it can also operate while connected to power indefinitely. The device comes with a remote control, and since it runs on LG's webOS platform, users can access streaming apps, live TV (via an optional tuner or IPTV), and screen mirroring from smartphones. The StanbyMe 2 also supports voice control through LG’s ThinQ AI and works with both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

Pricing and Availability

LG has announced that the 32-inch StanbyMe 2 4K will launch in South Korea in late April 2026 with a price tag of approximately 1.45 million won, which converts to around $1,080 USD. This is a notable premium over the 27-inch 1440p model, which was priced at about $900 at launch. The higher cost reflects the larger display and the 4K resolution upgrade. As of now, LG has not officially confirmed a release date for international markets, including the United States and Europe. Given that the previous StanbyMe models eventually reached global markets several months after their South Korean debuts, it is likely that the 32-inch version will follow a similar timeline. US consumers may see it in stores by late summer or early fall 2026, though this is speculation.

The pricing pits the StanbyMe 2 4K against other portable lifestyle projectors and TVs. For example, Samsung’s The Freestyle projector offers a 1080p image that can be scaled up to 100 inches, but it requires a surface and has lower resolution. Xgimi’s portable projectors also offer 1080p and 4K options but lack a built-in screen. The StanbyMe 2’s advantage is its all-in-one design: it provides a bright, high-resolution display that works in any lighting condition, unlike projectors that need a dark room. This makes it a more practical choice for everyday use in bright living rooms or kitchens.

The StanbyMe 2 4K also faces competition from other portable TVs, such as the Sony Bravia Portable (if it ever materializes) and various no-name brands, but LG’s reputation for display quality and webOS ecosystem gives it an edge. Additionally, the wheeled stand is a unique differentiator that no competitor has matched exactly. The device can also be detached from the stand and mounted on a wall or placed on a table using optional accessories, adding to its flexibility.

One area where LG could improve is the battery life. While 4.5 hours is sufficient for a movie or a few TV episodes, heavy users may find themselves needing to charge more frequently. The previous model’s 3.5-hour battery was a frequent complaint in reviews, so the slight increase is positive but not transformative. It remains to be seen whether the 4K panel consumes significantly more power, which could offset the battery improvement.

Another consideration is the touchscreen functionality. The original StanbyMe had a touchscreen, but LG quietly dropped that feature in the StanbyMe 2. The new 32-inch model does not include touch input, which might disappoint some users who enjoyed using the TV as a giant tablet for interactive apps or games. However, the remote control and smartphone app provide adequate navigation.

Overall, the 32-inch StanbyMe 2 4K represents a thoughtful evolution of LG’s portable TV concept. It addresses the two most common requests from users—larger screen and higher resolution—while maintaining the portability and unique design that made the series popular. As home entertainment continues to diversify beyond the traditional living room setup, devices like the StanbyMe offer a flexible alternative that can adapt to changing lifestyles. Whether it's used for backyard movie nights, kitchen cooking shows, or as a secondary monitor in a home office, the StanbyMe 2 4K is positioned to serve a variety of needs. Its South Korean launch is the first step, and the industry will be watching for a global rollout.
