As artificial intelligence accelerates the pace of software development, a new bottleneck has emerged: ensuring the code being produced is actually correct. Blacksmith, a startup focused on AI-powered code testing and validation, has raised a $45 million Series B round to address that challenge. The financing, led by Peak XV Partners, values the company at $550 million — a nearly tenfold increase from the $60 million valuation it received less than a year ago when it announced a $10 million Series A.
The new round brings Blacksmith’s total funding to $58.5 million. Existing investors GV and Y Combinator also participated in the Series B, signaling continued confidence from some of the most recognizable names in venture capital. The company was founded in 2024, making its rapid valuation growth particularly striking in a market where investors have become increasingly selective about AI-related startups.
From $60 million to $550 million in less than a year
Blacksmith’s valuation jump is one of the fastest seen in the AI infrastructure space recently. At the time of its Series A, the company was valued at $60 million and had just over 700 customers. Now, less than a year later, Blacksmith says it serves more than 5,000 customers, including well-known technology companies such as Mercury, Supabase, Clerk, Ashby, and Expensify.
The growth reflects a broader trend in the software industry: AI coding assistants are generating code at an unprecedented pace, but the process of validating that code has not kept up. Co-founder and CEO Aditya Jayaprakash made this point in an exclusive interview, noting that “validating code is still a bottleneck, and it’s an even bigger bottleneck because people are writing even more.”
Jayaprakash and his team have built a platform that helps companies build, test, and verify software before it reaches production. The startup initially focused on providing cloud infrastructure for continuous integration workloads, which are the automated processes that run code builds and tests every time a developer makes a change. This core service remains central to Blacksmith’s offering, but the company has expanded significantly since its founding.
The rise of AI coding tools and the testing bottleneck
The software development landscape has changed dramatically over the past few years. Tools like GitHub Copilot, Cursor, OpenAI’s Codex, and Anthropic’s Claude Code have made it possible for developers to generate code from natural language prompts, dramatically reducing the time required to write new features. According to industry estimates, AI assistants now help developers write a significant share of code at many companies, and some developers report that AI generates more than half of their code.
However, the quality of AI-generated code is not guaranteed. AI models can produce code that compiles but contains subtle logic errors, security vulnerabilities, or performance issues. In a production environment, such errors can lead to downtime, data breaches, or costly debugging sessions. The result is that while coding has become faster, testing and validation have become the new critical path in software delivery.
Blacksmith aims to solve this problem by offering a high-speed, cost-effective platform for running the automated tests that developers rely on to catch bugs before software is released. The company’s cloud infrastructure is designed to handle large numbers of concurrent builds and tests, enabling development teams to iterate quickly without sacrificing quality.
“People are writing even more,” Jayaprakash said, referring to the explosion of code created with AI assistance. In his view, the ability to validate that code efficiently is becoming a competitive advantage for companies that need to ship reliable software at speed.
Expanding beyond continuous integration
While Blacksmith started as a cloud provider for CI workloads, it has since broadened its platform with a product called Codesmith. Codesmith is an AI coding agent that can automatically fix failed code checks. Instead of simply surfacing a build error or a failed test, Codesmith analyzes the problem and attempts to generate a fix, which the developer can then review and approve.
This evolution positions Blacksmith not just as a testing infrastructure provider, but as a participant in the growing AI agent space. AI agents are software programs that can perform complex tasks with minimal human supervision, and many companies are exploring how they can be used to automate parts of the software development lifecycle. By integrating an AI agent directly into the testing workflow, Blacksmith aims to reduce the manual effort required to resolve defects.
The company’s growth has been notable by any measure. Jayaprakash said Blacksmith reached a $10 million annualized revenue run rate with just 10 employees. Since then, the workforce has grown to about 30 people, and revenue has increased to “tens of millions of dollars.” While he declined to provide a specific updated ARR figure, he did say that some of the startup’s largest customers now spend more than $1 million a year on the platform.
That level of customer spend indicates that Blacksmith is becoming embedded in the software development processes of its clients. For many organizations, continuous integration and testing are mission-critical functions, and switching to a new provider involves careful evaluation. The fact that Blacksmith has attracted million-dollar contracts within a relatively short time suggests that it is delivering tangible value.
A crowded and competitive market
Blacksmith is operating in a crowded market with several formidable competitors. GitHub Actions, a built-in CI/CD service from the Microsoft-owned platform, is widely used by developers. Cursor Automations, from the AI code editor startup, also offers automated code verification capabilities. In addition, validation features are being baked directly into AI coding tools such as Codex and Claude Code, which could reduce the need for separate testing platforms.
Large cloud providers are also entering the space. Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud all offer AI code-testing services that compete with Blacksmith to some degree. These companies have the advantage of scale, existing customer relationships, and deep integrations with their own clouds.
Despite this competition, Jayaprakash says Blacksmith differentiates itself through speed and affordability. Testing code can be expensive, especially when large codebases require thousands of tests to be run repeatedly. Blacksmith’s cloud infrastructure is designed to optimize resource usage, allowing customers to run tests faster and at lower cost than traditional CI systems.
“We are competing on the speed of testing code as well as affordability,” Jayaprakash said. This value proposition is particularly important for startups and mid-sized companies that need to scale their development efforts without inflating their infrastructure budgets.
What’s next for Blacksmith
Looking ahead, Blacksmith plans to expand into a broader suite of coding tools. The company’s stated goal is to help developers write, validate, and merge software faster, which suggests that it may eventually offer features beyond testing and validation. This could include code review automation, deployment tools, or deeper integration with version control systems.
The company’s rapid growth and significant valuation increase have attracted attention, but they also come with increased expectations. Investors will be watching to see whether Blacksmith can sustain its momentum and fend off competition from both established players and other startups. The company’s ability to grow its customer base from 700 to 5,000 in less than a year demonstrates strong product-market fit, but the long-term challenge will be retaining those customers as larger rivals refine their own AI testing capabilities.
For now, Blacksmith appears well-positioned to benefit from one of the most important trends in software development: the shift toward AI-assisted coding.
