If you want the cleanest Android experience, a Google Pixel is your best bet. However, even pure Android isn’t immune to slowdowns over time. The Tensor chips in recent Pixels, while efficient, can’t match the raw grunt of Snapdragon rivals, meaning heavy usage or cluttered storage often leads to stuttering and lag. Fortunately, most performance issues aren’t hardware failures – they’re software clutter you can clear in a few minutes. Below are five effective methods to speed up your Pixel without voiding warranty or rooting the device.
Free Up Storage
The most obvious culprit is a full storage drive. Google itself has warned that Android performance degrades when free space drops below 10%. Once you cross that threshold, the system struggles to cache temporary files, update apps, or even load the camera quickly. You’ll notice delayed taps, app stuttering, and slower multitasking. The fix begins in Settings under Storage. The built-in storage manager shows exactly what’s eating space – large apps, cached data, old downloads, and backed-up photos. Turn on “Smart Storage” to automatically remove backed-up photos after 60 days under 25% free space. Use the “Free up space” tool to delete unused apps and temporary files. For a deeper clean, manually clear app caches via Settings > Apps > each app > Storage > Clear Cache. Offload old photos and videos to Google Photos or an external drive, then delete local copies. Also delete offline Google Maps data and old downloads. Keeping at least 2–3 GB free ensures the system can breathe. A clean storage foundation prevents lag before it starts.
Disable AICore
Less known is AICore, a system service introduced on Pixel 8 and later. AICore manages on-device AI models like Gemini Nano for features such as Magic Compose, Notification Summaries, and offline speech recognition. It runs continuously, reserving several gigabytes of RAM and occasionally eating storage during model updates. This background processing can bottleneck older Tensor chips. To disable it, navigate to Settings > Apps > See all apps > tap the three-dot menu and show system apps. Scroll to AICore, tap Force Stop, then press Disable. Note: This only affects on-device AI features; cloud-based Gemini and the Gemini app remain fully functional. You lose offline AI perks but gain immediate RAM relief and snappier UI performance. If you rarely use those AI features, disabling AICore is a safe and reversible tweak. You can re-enable it later if needed. Understand that this is not the same as turning off the Google Assistant – your voice commands and assistant queries still work via cloud processing.
Uninstall Unused Apps
Pixel phones ship with minimal bloatware, but over time you accumulate apps you no longer need. While most can be uninstalled by long-pressing the icon, some system apps are locked. To remove those, you can use Shizuku and Canta – two free tools that grant temporary elevated permissions via ADB without rooting. Shizuku sets up a local ADB connection, and Canta lists all system apps with safe removal suggestions. Tap to uninstall bloatware like 3D live wallpapers, carrier services, or duplicate Google apps. Alternatively, use ADB commands directly from a computer: connect via USB, enable USB debugging in Developer Options, and run pm uninstall -k --user 0 package.name. This removes apps permanently for the current user. Be careful not to remove critical system components. Focus on apps that have no realistic use – old games, unused utilities, or trial software. Fewer apps mean less background activity, less cached data, and a lighter load on system resources.
Cap Background Processes
Android keeps recently used apps in memory to allow instant switching. But on devices with limited RAM (e.g., Pixel 6 with 8 GB), dozens of cached apps consume gigabytes, leading to lag when the system must reprioritize resources. Developer Options hides a setting called “Background Process Limit”. Enable Developer Options by going to Settings > About phone > tap Build Number seven times. Then go to Settings > System > Developer Options > Background Process Limit. Change it from “Standard” to “At most 2 processes” or “At most 3 processes”. This forces Android to keep fewer apps cached, freeing RAM for the foreground app. The trade-off is that switching back to a previously used app may reload it from scratch. For daily use, a limit of 2–3 background processes provides a good balance. If you notice apps refreshing often, adjust to a higher limit. This setting is especially helpful after disabling AICore, as the freed RAM can be used more efficiently.
Remove Live Wallpapers and Dynamic Widgets
Live wallpapers and dynamic widgets constantly draw frames and tap sensors, consuming CPU and GPU resources even when you aren’t actively using the phone. A live wallpaper with water ripples or parallax effects runs a background service that updates the display. Dynamic widgets – weather, calendar, news feeds – refresh periodically, waking the system from sleep and causing lag. Switch to a static wallpaper (a simple dark or solid color works best) and limit widgets to one or two static ones, like a simple analog clock without weather updates. Disable widgets that update location or pull network data frequently. Go to the home screen, long-press a widget, and remove it. For live wallpapers, long-press the home screen, tap Styles & wallpapers, and choose a static image. Removing these visual enhancements reduces battery drain and makes scrolling and app switching feel snappier. As a bonus, your Pixel will have more juice left at the end of the day. Combined with the other tweaks, your phone will run like new.
